- L'album a reçu bon nombre de critiques concernant les paroles de certaines chansons et via l'imagerie mélant sexe, mariage et religion. Associations familiales, conservateurs et moralistes en tout genre condamnent Madonna et montrent leur mécontentement.

- Madonna est la première artiste féminine à marcher sur les traces de ses pairs masculins en ce qui concerne l'ambiguité sexuelle, la volonté de pouvoir et la puissance iconographique ; jusqu'àlors ces domaines étaient réservés à Michaël Jackson, David Bowie ou encore Prince.
