Cette chanson de 1984 peut trouver son écho dans « American Life » en 2003 qui a tant fait couler d'encre. Une critique de la société de consommation où superficialité et argent font la loi. Madonna en prend son parti, joue de son image en se moquant d'elle-même, de ses désirs et de ses rêves de petite peste capricieuse. Elle pointe du doigt les travers de bons nombre de jeunes filles dans les pays industrialisés. A la fin de la chanson, elle reconnaît que tout ceci n'est qu'éphémère et que seul l'expérience fait grandir et réfléchir au monde qui nous entoure. C'est çà la véritable richesse.
